Waste Management Phoenix Open | Recap
SCOTTSDALE - As golf fans stuck with the tournament despite Super Bowl LVI approaching kick-off, Scottie Scheffler won the WM Phoenix Open on the third playoff hole (par-4 18th), draining a 25’ 7” birdie putt to defeat Patrick Cantlay to earn his first PGA TOUR victory in his 71st career start.
Scheffler became the third consecutive first-time winner of the season and the fifth overall. It was the 13th first-time winner in Phoenix Open tournament history and first since Brooks Koepka in 2015.
Cantlay, a six-time PGA Tour winner, finished as runner-up for the sixth time.
Playoff records: Scheffler (1-0), Cantlay (3-2).
Five of the Top 10 players who entered the week inside the Top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking finished inside the Top 10 at the WM Phoenix Open.
Sahith Theegala fell to 0-for-2 on Tour when he held the 54-hole lead.
Carlos Ortiz aced the par-3 16th with a 9-iron from 178 yards. Ortiz combined with Sam Ryder’s ace on Saturday, marked the first time the WM Phoenix Open has had multiple holes-in-one in the same week since 1997 (Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker).
