SCOTTSDALE - Blame it on Ryo. Yes, Ryo Hisatsune surged to the lead at the 2026 Waste Management Phoenix Open with a scorching, second round (63). He leads Hideki Matsuyama by a single stroke after Matsuyama shot (64). That makes for al all Japan Top 2.
Hisatsune (1st/-11) played his final six holes in 6-under (four birdies, one eagle) for a 63 to complete his low 18-hole score in his 208 career rounds on TOUR. His (131) combined score marked his career-low 36-hole score on TOUR with the previous: 132/2024 Puerto Rico Open, 2024 American Express).
Hisatsune now has his first career 36-hole lead/co-lead on TOUR after entering the week with only one career lead/co-lead after any round on TOUR after R-1 of the 2024 Puerto Rico Open where he finished T18.
Hisatsune finished T2 at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open, his best career finish on TOUR in 65 starts.
He seeks to become the sixth different player from Japan to win on the PGA TOUR (Hideki Matsuyama, Shigeki Maruyama, Isao Aoki, Ryuji Imada, Satoshi Kodaira).
Guess who is lurking one stroke behind?
Yes, Matsuyama.
The two-time WM Phoenix Open champion (2016, 2017), Matsuyama (2nd/-10) posted an impressive (64) for his second-lowest 18-hole score in 47 career tournament rounds at the WM Phoenix Open (63/R3/2015). He birdied six in a row (Nos. 13-18) to equal his longest streak of consecutive birdies on TOUR, tying 2023 Sentry/R3) while his back-nine (30) now marks his career-low score on the back nine at TPC Scottsdale.
Noteable players who MTC: A not-so-sharp Brooks Koepka (T86/+2) posted rounds of (75-69) to miss the cut (-1). Other noteables to to MTC include, Joel Dahmen, Corey Conners, Billy Horschel, Tony Finau and Sam Burns.
