PGA Tour Brunch | First Round Coverage of the Truist Championship | Philly
By TERRY LYONS, Editor of Digital Sports Desk
WISSAHICKON - Today’s Truist Championship tee-off marks the first PGA TOUR event played in Philadelphia since the 2018 BMW Championship (won by St, John’s man Keegan Bradley). The tournament will return to Charlotte and Quail Hollow Club in 2026 (avoiding this year’s conflict of dates with the PGA).
This weekend’s host golf club, The Philadelphia Cricket Club, is the oldest private club in the United States, founded in 1854. Its Wissahickon Course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast – who was a member of the clubby back when. Philly CC opened for play in 1922. The Wissahickon Course has hosted a number of premier national and regional events, including the 2016 SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, won by the great Bernhard Langer.
The Truist is the sixth of eight Signature Events of the season and includes 44 of the Top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking, headlined by World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, No. 3 Xander Schauffele, No. 4 Collin Morikawa and No. 5 Justin Thomas.
Additional field features:
27 players in the field competed at last week’s CJ CUP Byron Nelson, including five who finished inside the Top 10: Erik van Rooyen (2nd), Sam Stevens (3rd), Jordan Spieth (4th), Sam Burns (T5), Eric Cole (T5).
Seven past champions: Rory McIlroy (2010, 2015, 2021, 2024), Lucas Glover (2011), Rickie Fowler (2012), Brian Harman (2017), Jason Day (2018), Max Homa (2019, 2022), Wyndham Clark (2023).
Five past FedEx Cup champions: Jordan Spieth (2015), Justin Thomas (2017), Justin Rose (2018), Patrick Cantlay (2021), Viktor Hovland (2023)
Sponsor exemptions: Rickie Fowler, Keith Mitchell, Jordan Spieth, Gary Woodland.
The ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic is in its second year after being added to the PGA TOUR schedule in 2024, the latest addition to the schedule since 2022 when the Mexico Open at Vidanta World and Genesis Scottish Open were added to the tour.
The winner at Myrtle will receive 300 FedExCup points, a two-year exemption on the PGA TOUR through the 2027 season and an invitation to next week’s PGA Championship (if not already exempt).

On This Day in Golf History
May 8, 1994 -John Daly won his third of five PGA Tour titles at the Bell South Classic in Atlanta, Georgia. Daly defeated Nolan Hencke and Brian Henninger by only a stroke to take the title. Larry Dorman of The New York Times wrote at the time, “John Daly took another giant step on the road back today. He took an emotional walk across the minefield from alcoholism, from suspension, and ultimately, from self-doubt, all on one, cool, spectacular afternoon and he won the Bell South Classic at the Atlanta Country club the way he has never won a golf tournament in his life. He won it sober.” - Courtesy of Randy Walker, Author of On This Day in Golf History, available via Amazon.com and by clicking HERE
