PGA Tour Brunch | Truist Championship
PGA Tour Brunch Preview of the '25 Truest | Outskirts of Philadelphia
By TERRY LYONS, Editor of Digital Sports Desk
WISSAHICKON - In two weeks, the very best golfers in the world will gather at famed Quail Hollow in Charlotte to compete for the 2025 PGA Championship, the second of four Major Championships this pro golf season. This week, acting as a pinch-hitter for Quail Hollow, the Philadelphia Cricket Club at Wissahickon, the oldest private golf club in the United States, will play host to a PGA Tour Signature Event tagged the Truist Championship. (It’s a spell check/auto correct nightmare).
A few hundred miles south, a smaller portion of the member golfers of the PGA Tour will compete in the 2025 ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic, the 22nd of 36 FedExCup Regular Season events.
Since the ONEflight has $4 million on the line and the Truist has a $20 million purse, we’ll be concentrating on the Philly area event this week, with maybe a short look at Myrtle Beach.
While we’re not to be fooled by the bait and switch (Quail Hollow to Philly Cricket), it must be noted that Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, is a four-time winner of the Truist Championship, all at Quail Hollow Club (2010, 2015, 2021, 2024). The World’s No. 2 ranked player is making his first start on TOUR since finishing T12 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with partner. Prior to that, McIlroy completed his career Grand Slam of the Majors with his win at The Masters.
With a win this weekend, regardless of the venue change, McIlroy could become the 14th player in TOUR history to win the same event at least five times.
McIlroy will not be out there playing by himself. Jordan Spieth finished solo fourth at last week’s CJ CUP Byron Nelson, his fourth consecutive finish inside the top 20 and second top-five of the season (T4/WM Phoenix Open). Justin Thomas, the World No. 5, is making his first start since winning the 2025 RBC Heritage, his 16th career PGA TOUR victory and first since the 2022 PGA Championship. It is Thomas’ highest position in the Official World Golf Ranking since the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open (No. 5).
Note: There are two tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule this weekend, the Truist and the Myrtle Beach Classic. As per usual in these situations, 99% of the PGATourBrunch focus will be with the big boys at the Truist.

On This Day in Golf History
May 7, 2006 -Jim Furyk won his 11th PGA Tour title at the Wachovia Championship at Quail Hollow - the same course being utilized today. Furyk defeated Trevor Immelman on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. Immelman had to two-putt from 50 feet on the final hole of regulation to earn his first-ever tournament on the United States, but missed a 10-foot par putt to fall into the playoff. After Immelman’s tee shot found deep rough and Furyk made a six foot par putt to claim victory and a $1.134m first place check. - Courtesy of Randy Walker, Author of On This Day in Golf History, available via Amazon.com and by clicking HERE
