Third Round Coverage of the 2026 Canadian Open | Toronto
The Cut: A total of 74 professionals and one amateur at 2-under 138 from a field of 144 professionals and three amateurs.
CALEDON (Ontario) - Ben James (1st/-10), the 23-year-old making his professional debut after finishing as the No. 1 player in the 2026 PGA TOUR University Ranking, recorded a career-best 18-hole score with a bogey-free 7-under (63), his first bogey-free round in his 24th round on TOUR. His previous best was Round 1: 67/R1/2026 RBC Canadian Open.
James holds first lead after any round on TOUR with his previous best being the 36-hole position: T13/2025 Valero Texas Open. He made two PGA Tour cuts in nine prior starts as an amateur (T44/2024 Rocket Classic, T33/2025 Valero Texas Open).
James joined Ludvig Aberg (2023), Michael Thorbjornsen (2024), and David Ford (2025) as the fourth player to earn TOUR membership as the No. 1 player from PGA TOUR University. James finished his college career at Virginia (2022-26) with seven victories, tying Ben Kohles’ school record for career wins and led the Cavaliers to the program’s first two ACC Championships (2025, 2026) and a national runner-up finish in 2025.
Our 18-hole co-leader, Sam Burns (T2/-9, looks to become the second player this season to finish runner-up and win the same tournament the next year (Gary Woodland, 2025-26 Texas Children’s Houston Open) after finishing runner-up in the 2025 RBC Canadian Open (defeated by Ryan Fox on the fourth playoff hole); has not recorded a score worse than 68 in six career rounds at TPC Toronto.
Five players are tied at 9-under, one shot off the lead, including three players seeking their first PGA TOUR title: Jackson Suber (41 starts), Haotong Li (64 starts), Jesper Svensson (39 starts).
Paul Waring WD during the first round and Jeffrey Kang WD prior to first round; replaced by Jeremy Paul.
