The Northern Trust/FedExCup Playoffs Notebook

2020 FedExCup Champion, Dustin Johnson became the first players since Tiger Woods (2009) to lead the FedExCup standings entering the TOUR Championship and win the FedExCup title. Johnson has six victories in the FedExCup Playoffs, the most all-time in the 14 seasons of the FedExCup Playoffs. Since 2007, only nine players have won multiple times in a single season during the Playoffs.

Six players have qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs in each season since the creation of the FedExCup in 2007. They are: Charley Hoffman (32), Phil Mickelson (58), Bubba Watson (71), Adam Scott (82), Brandt Snedeker (100) and Matt Kuchar (120). Mickelson and Kuchar have both qualified for the TOUR Championship nine times to lead the group, while Snedeker is only player among the six to win the FedExCup.

Collin Morikawa, who enters the FedExCup Playoffs at No. 1 in the FedExCup standings is set to make his third Playoffs appearance (59th/2019, 6th/2020). Morikawa has led the FedExCup in four of the 43 weeks this season and also leads the TOUR in SG: Tee-to-Green (1.956) and SG: Approach-the-Green (1.395).

Eight of the top 10 in the FedExCup standings entering The Northern Trust check in at 30 years of age or younger: No. 1 Collin Morikawa (24); No. 2 Jordan Spieth (28); No. 3 Patrick Cantlay (29); No. 5 Jon Rahm (26); No. 6 Abraham Ancer (30); No. 7 Bryson DeChambeau (27); No. 9 Justin Thomas (28); No. 10 Sam Burns (25).

Garrick Higgo, the winner of the 2021 Palmetto Championship at Congaree represents the lone PGA Tour rookie to qualify for the 2021 FedExCup Playoffs. At 22 years, 3 months, Higgo (104th) is also the youngest player to qualify for the Playoffs.

TL’s Wedge for an Edge: It’s FedEx Cup Playoff time! Players need to come hard with every GREAT player they have, or toss in one longshot? My PGA Fantasy game foursome will include: Harris English, Adam Scott, defending champ Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth. The bench players will be: Bryson DeChambeau and Sam Burns. For my one and done, I’m going with Harris English. (Last week we missed our One and done - Adam Scott - by a four-footer).
