The Honda Classic | Tournament Preview
PALM BEACH GARDENS - There’s a mixed bag of talent and snubs at this Year’s Honda classic, resulting in what will be called a weaker field come Thursday. Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay, the top three players in the World Golf Rankings are all passing on the Honda.
Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger, Sungai Im and last week’s (The Genesis) winner Joaquin Niemann lead the field while an influx of international golfers provides new depth and fresh faces at Palm Beach Garden’s PGA National.
Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Martin Kaymer, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, and Padraig Harrington all make their 2022 PGA Tour debut.
The players will be adjusting to Bermuda greens.
The Bear Trap, holes 15/16/17 on PGA National, gets lots of attention and its own dedicated TV feed, and the numbers always prove how tough that three-hole stretch plays. But, PGA National’s holes 5/6/7 have played equally tough, dating back to 2007. Only Quail Hollow, Pebble Beach and Muirfield have tougher stretches of land.
That stated, 1,604 balls have been hit into the water at the Bear Trap since 2007.
The Basics:
The Honda Classic Tee Times start Thursday at 6:50am (ET) and go to 1:46pm (ET).
Weather: Thursday’s forecast for the opening round is for breezy conditions with winds 10-20 mph and gusts to 25 mph. Temps 68-81 degrees. There will be a 20% chance of rain (link). Partly cloudy with passing showers expected all weekend.
PGA Tour Brunch will post at 6:00AM (ET) on Thursday.
Next Week: Arnold Palmer Invitational and Puerto Rico Open
