Early Start for the 2023 Farmer's Insurance Open at Torrey Pines
By TERRY LYONS
SAN DIEGO - Your regular six-days-a-week (Wednesday through Monday) PGA Tour Brunch has arrived a day early this week. The fact of the matter, the Farmer’s Insurance Open at Torrey Pines will be staged Wednesday, Jan. 25th through Saturday, January 28th as the minds behind the Tour avoid the AFC-NFC Championship weekend. Those smart people at PGA TOUR HQ.
Since the Farmers Insurance Open moved to Torrey Pines in 1968, two-time 2023 winner Jon Rahm (Sentry ToC and AMEX) has the second-lowest scoring averageof any player of any player at the event (minimum 10 rounds) behind only seven-time champion Tiger Woods, who is only 0.01 lower than Rahm.
Lowest Scoring Average at the Farmers Insurance Open (1968-present with a minimum of 10 rounds):
Average - Player - Rounds
69.28 - Tiger Woods - 68
69.29 - Jon Rahm - 24
69.33 - Rory McIlroy - 12
69.71 - Jack Nicklaus - 28
Luke List won the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open in a playoff over Will Zalatoris, earning his first career PGA Tour title. List entered the final round trailing by five strokes and carded a 66 to force the playoff before recording a birdie on the first extra hole. He has not recorded a top-10 in 27 starts on Tour since the victory.
Zalatoris, the third-highest ranked player in the field at No. 7 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has made two starts on Tour since returning from the back injury that forced him to withdraw from the 2022 BMW Championship. This month, he’s gone: T-11/Sentry Tournament of Champions, T-36/The American Express. He is one of three players to finish in the Top 10 in each of the last two years at the Farmers Insurance Open. The others? List and Rahm.
San Diego native Xander Schauffele is the second-highest ranked player in the field at No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Schauffele recorded his first career albatross on No. 5 during the final round of The American Express and finished T-3.

TL’s Wedge for an Edge: Nailed the chalky Jon Rahm last week, and like Rahm, I’m 2-for-3 since Jan 1st. That is no great shakes. Misfired - like John Calapari - on my One-and-Ones. This week, more chalk suggestions with Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris.
For the Tour One and Done? Zalatoris.
