PGA Tour Brunch with Third Round Coverage | Torrey Pines
By TERRY LYONS, Editor of Digital Sports Desk
SAN DIEGO - What’s in a name? That which we call a Rose, by any other name would smell as sweet, shoot 62-65-127 (-17) after 36 holes and maybe be called a Scheffler?
Apologies to “Billy Shakes,” but the two rounds to set the 36-hole record at Torrey Pines is a masterpiece in the works for Shakespeare’s fellow Englishman Justin Rose who tops the leaderboard at the Farmers Insurance Open.
How do I count the ways? (Switching to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, I might add):
Justin Rose (1st/-17) 2019 Farmers Insurance Open winner posts 17-under 127, the lowest 36-hole score in relation to par at this event since 1983.
Four-stroke lead ties tournament-record 36-hole margin (2008/Tiger Woods, 1955/Tommy Bolt, 1952/Ted Kroll)
Rose’s (127) total is one stroke shy of his career best 36-hole score on TOUR (126/2010 Travelers Championship).
Rose is one of seven past champions in the field, has four Top-10s in 15 starts at the event.
Seamus Power (2nd/-13) makes eagle on his 36th hole (No. 9/NC) to reach 13-under and solo second; makes the cut for the first time in his sixth appearance at the Farmers Insurance Open; leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (5.636).
Joel Dahmen (T3/-11), playing out of the No. 111-125 FedExCup Fall standings, got into the field on Monday when Patton Kizzire withdrew. Dahmen notchesd three eagles in round two and four total this week (No. 6/SC/R1, No. 10/NC/R2, No. 5/NC/R2, No. 9/NC/R2) becoming the first player to make four eagles in a week at the Farmers Insurance Open since 1983. A Top-10 finish would mark his third at the Farmers Insurance Open (T9/2019, T9/2025), the most at an event in his PGA TOUR career.
Making his first start in a non-major on the PGA TOUR since the 2022 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play via its returning member program, Brooks Koepka (T58/-3) made the cut on the number, posting his 350th under-par round on the PGA TOUR (627 rounds); the nine-time winner is making his 187th PGA TOUR start and fifth at the Farmers Insurance Open where he has now made the cut twice (T41/2015); eagle on No. 17 (NC) marks the 99th eagle of his PGA TOUR career.

On This Day in Golf History
January 31, 1982 - Jack Nicklaus shot a (then) course record (64) in the final round at Torrey Pines (South Course) but fell one shot shy of Johnny Miller who won the Andy Williams San Diego Open. Nicklaus’ round included two eagles but Miller’s (70) was good enough to win. - Courtesy of Randy Walker, Author of On This Day in Golf History, available via Amazon.com and by clicking HERE
