Wells Fargo Championship | ‘24 Tournament Preview
CHARLOTTE - This is the 21st playing of the Wells Fargo Championship since its inception in 2003 and the 19th at Quail Hollow. The tournament moved to Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington in 2017 and TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in 2022 as Quail Hollow prepared to host the 2017 PGA Championship and 2022 Presidents Cup. The Wells Fargo Championship is the sixth Signature Event of the season.
Only 18 players in the field competed last week at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, including winner Taylor Pendrith, runner-up Ben Kohles, and four other players who finished in the Top 10 (Alex Noren/3rd, Byeong Hun An/T4, Jake Knapp/8th and Kevin Tway/T9). Four players in the field are competing in a Signature Event for the first time this season, with all four qualifying via the Aon Swing 5: Taylor Pendrith, Ben Kohles, Billy Horschel and Kevin Tway.
Defending champion Wyndham Clark captured his first career PGA TOUR title at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship and has added two victories since then: the 2023 U.S. Open and 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Clark joined a group of first-time TOUR winners at Quail Hollow Club, including Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Max Homa.
Two eligible players are not competing this week, as Scottie Scheffler (wife expecting a child) and Ludvig Åberg (knee). Scheffler is not replaced in the field because there are no alternates for the top 50 category. There will be 69 players in the field.
