Opening Round (A Day Early) for The Farmer's Insurance Open 2023
By TERRY LYONS
SAN DIEGO - The top of the recent PGA Tour leaderboard at the end of each week is beginning to look like MVP candidates for the NBA - ALL INTERNATIONAL.
The last four Tour events have been won by players from outside the United States, the longest streak since the fall portion of the 2021-22 season. That equates to five winners: Sungjae Im, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Lucas Herbert, Viktor Hovland).
In 2023:
Tournament - Winner - Country
The American Express - Jon Rahm - Spain
Sony Open in Hawaii - Si Woo Kim South - Korea
Sentry Tournament of Champions - Jon Rahm - Spain
Last of 2022:
The RSM Classic - Adam Svensson - Canada
PGA Tour rookies Davis Thompson (2nd) and Taylor Montgomery (5th) both finished in the Top Five at The American Express and are the two highest-ranked rookies in the FedEx Cup standings, with Montgomery at No. 9 and Thompson No. 19. Both players reached career-high positions in the Official World Golf Ranking (Montgomery No. 52, Thompson No. 59). Montgomery has finished T15 or better in eight of nine starts this season; no other player has done so more than five times (J.J. Spaun, Tom Hoge). He also leads the PGA Tour in Top-10s with four.
Five-time PGA Tour winner J.B. Holmes is making his first start today since the 2021 Fortinet Championship. Holmes is competing on a Major Medical Extension with 26 starts available to earn 288.816 FedExCup points. Holmes has not finished in the top-10 of a PGA Tour event since winning the 2019 Genesis Invitational.
